'The audience went insane - I can't remember the last time I was at a concert and the crowd screamed that loud. Elliott took a moment to bask in the glory and dove right into the lyrics of his opening number. His voice live hits you like a sucker punch and I was nearly taken aback. I had been told by so many of y'all what a difference his voice was live, and you weren't kidding. As his singing soars up and out, you soar right along with him. It was pitch-perfect and

exuded confidence, commitment, and sexuality.. To those of you who have yet to see him, you are in for one heck of a ride. Q. How would you describe the sound and feel for "Elliot Yamin," your debut album?
A. I would describe it as being real soulful. It's got a very mature, sophisticated sound to it, it's kind of an artist's album, if you will. One of the great things about the deal that I got was that we did an independent partnership with Sony/ATV; my publishing company. The deal we did, and the way we did it, was unique and innovative in a way. That being said, I had a lot of creative freedom which is something you always hear an artist talk about. Coming out the gate I thought it was really important to be me and make the kind of music that I like. Write and co-write that songs I liked and wanted to do, I think it's important to stay true to yourself and not have to compromise your style or who you are as an artist and I don't think we did that with this album. It's all me, who I am, it's very genuine and not too overproduced and it's a great vibe.

Q. Where did you draw your inspirations from for the album?
A. Personal experiences and just being socially aware of what's going on. I think it's important to write from your heart, think of past experiences, to think of what you have been through personally. So, a lot of songs on the album are built around love and love songs, love this and love that. It's been great and I'm a very loving person and I've received a lot of love over the past year and so forth. I've got a lot of loving relationships with a lot of people; I think those are my main inspirations.
Q. How did "Wait For You" get chosen as the first single released?
A. There were various reasons, number one, I really liked the lyrics of the song and how I performed it. I didn't write the song, it was written by Taj Jackson, who is a writer for Stargate, they produced the track. I don't know if you know too much about Pop music and them; but they're all over the radio waves. They've got a bunch of hits under their belt; it's a combination of things. Obviously, your first single you want to be played on the radio but there aren't too many hotter producers on the radio than Stargate, so that was a perfect fit. Like I said, I really liked the way I performed the song and how heartfelt the performance was vocally and the lyrics were great too. It was also something different, just to give the audience something that is a different taste. We released this teaser, which is a song called "Movin' On," it's the first song on the album. It's got a Hip Hop, up-tempo beat to it. That was the teaser and I kind of wanted to give everyone a different taste to my sensitive side.

Q. When will listeners and fans get to see a live performance from you showcasing your new CD?
A. Yeah we do, we're going to do "Regis and Kelly" in New York the day of the release on March 20th and then we'll be doing "Jimmy Kimmel" on April 4th I think. I think more talk show dates are on the table right now. I think once the record comes out and once the single gets added to more radio stations we'll be getting more offers and those things on the table will become complete. I am doing a thing for Clear Channel like KISS in LA and Z100 in New York, they're doing this big promo thing in Bahamas the week of my release. They'll be a few artists down there, like JoJo and Akon, performing for contest winners. We'll be doing the acoustic thing down there the week of the release and doing a whole bunch of radio and satellite tours; we'll be all over the map.

Q. You mentioned that you didn't pen the song "Wait For You," but, how much hand in the production and writing on the CD did you have?
A. I was involved with it one hundred percent pretty much. I co-wrote all but four songs on the album and there are eleven songs total. As far as the songs I help put together the melodies and I definitely arranged the vocals. So, I was a big part of it and that's how it should be; that's how it should always be.

Q. What do you think it is about the music and songs on the album that will really resonate with listeners?
A. I think that the melodies and the lyrics are really intriguing, I know that sounds kind of broad, but I think people will really be drawn to the music. I think people will be drawn to the music and the vocals. There are some songs on there, the samples people are hearing, they are really touching people, they are really feeling the meanings of the songs. We're getting great responses from all the samples that we're putting out there

Q. Do you have a favorite track?
A. There are so many of them and the songs are so different. All of them have a different dynamic to them; it's hard to say which one I like the most. A lot of them are my favorites for different reasons. I really like "Take My Breath Away," I really love the lyrics in "One Word" and I love the song "Train Wreck." There is another song called "Find A Way," I love the lyrics in that. That song talks about things that are going on in the world today and what's going on socially. It's got really important lyrics and I think that people are really feeling that one and that one sounds really good live. We've included that particular song
Q. What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?
A. I just wanted to say I don't think there is a way to thank those people out there enough. I really get a true sense of family from my fans, everybody is in it together, that's how I approach this whole thing as a team project, we're all in it together. Let's just go out and do this and do this together. That's what I'm all about, when I talk about my album or the music, I always like to say we and what we're doing because it's a total team effort. We had so many great key players and everybody did what they do best individually and collectively. I like to take that approach with fans too, I owe them a serious debt of gratitude for their support and hanging in there with me. Everybody has been really patient because it's taken quite a while to build this album and come out with my own stuff. I think it's been well worth the wait and I appreciate all of their love and support. Let's do this together!'

'"It's an eclectic mix of just different sounds for every listener out there — for the ['Idol'] viewers, for the young cats, for everyone in between," Yamin said. "We worked with so many different ideas and sounds ... and it's not your typical-sounding album." .."Movin' On," which Yamin recorded before he hit the road on the American Idols Live Tour last summer..is about "trying to get this girl's attention and she's not giving you any rhythm, so you're just ready to move on," Yamin said. "It's got an uptempo, dance vibe to it."

Other tracks on the album include second single "Wait for You," the bluesy ballad "Take My Breath Away" written by John Mayer guitarist David Ryan Harris, and the socially conscious "Find a Way."

Yamin also covers Leon Russell's "A Song for You," which Yamin's idol, Donny Hathaway, recorded in 1971 and which brought Paula Abdul to tears when Yamin sang it on "Idol."

"I have a throwback voice," Yamin said. "People listen to my voice and tell that I'm really influenced by that era, by that genre of music. We did a good job of modernizing that to a certain extent on some songs, but I'm always going to stay true to my style and choice of music. I don't think we compromise that at all."

'For about three months this winter, Yamin hopscotched from L.A. to New York to Atlanta to work on the 11 songs (and others) that will be released March 20 under the straightforward title, "Elliott Yamin." It's an intriguing mixture of old school soul ("Movin' On"), radio-friendly smooth R&B (first single "Wait for You"), sensitive crooning ("One Word") and rousing gospel-flavored pop ("Free"). "The way this album is made is very organic. There's no glossiness to it, and that's something I'm really proud of," Yamin says. He worked with renowned producers such as Tony Reyes (Christina Aguilera, Ciara, Lionel Richie), the Norwegian team known as Stargate (Beyoncé, Ne-Yo, Rihanna) and Mike Mangini (Bruce Hornsby, Joss Stone, David Byrne) hefty names for a newcomer.. "These days, records don't sell like they used to, and I try to defer my mind away from, OK, how many records am I going to sell? That really isn't important to me. If people can just appreciate the stuff that I did, it'll come. And if it doesn't, it doesn't." As for that record deal, it's a unique situation that could prove financially tremendous for Yamin if the album succeeds.

He has a publishing deal with Sony/ATV, which means songwriting and licensing royalties because he wrote one song on his album and co-wrote four others. The album is being released on Hickory Records, an imprint that is owned by Sony, but, according to Yamin's manager, Jeff Rabhan, is a virtual label. Sony provided a marketing budget, and Rabhan's entertainment company, Three Ring Projects, was responsible for hiring publicists and scoring a distribution deal to get the music to the public.

"Hickory Records doesn't exist anywhere except in Elliott Yamin's world," said Rabhan, who, coincidentally, grew up in Richmond and worked with Clay Aiken and Kelly Clarkson during his time at major entertainment management company The Firm. "He is the launching artist for this imprint . . . but I have the utmost amount of faith. There are no guarantees in the record business, but we feel great because we're not relying on someone else to do something." Yamin is also a 50-50 partner in his record -- a solid deal in an industry where the artist usually sees about 12 percent to 15 percent of royalties. "Sony invested in me as a partner," Yamin says. "We both stand or fall." ..when he was recording the single, "Wait for You," in New York with Stargate, the producers called him out of the booth to listen to another song. "It turned out to be 'One Word,' and they wanted to know if I liked the song and wanted to cut it, too. I was blown away...I don't think Stargate knew who I was, which was great. I think I went in there and really showed them. They were probably thinking, here's another 'American Idol' reject trying to make it," he says with a laugh. Yamin hasn't returned to Richmond since his December appearance at a charity tennis expo, but will be home twice this month. On March 21, he'll fly in from New York for an in-store appearance at the Circuit City in Short Pump ("I've got to show the hometown some love," he says), then fly out to the Bahamas to perform for radio station contest winners from New York and Los Angeles. On March 31, he's back home for a charity event for Comfort Zone, an organization that supports grieving children.

In between are scheduled appearances on "Regis & Kelly," an appearance at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square and a possible visit to Ellen DeGeneres. He's also just taped an audio performance for www.napster.com and a video rehearsal jam for www.rehearsals.com, which should be up in a couple of weeks. Yamin will likely embark on a small tour this spring, and, depending on the album's reception, a larger trek in the summer. Right now, though, he's actually enjoying watching "American Idol" on TV when he has time. "It's pretty cool to see it on the air and be on the other side. When I watch it, I get so tickled. I watch it with an ear-to-ear grin," Yamin says, citing LaKisha Jones, Melinda Doolittle..as favorites. "It's a wonderful sense of pride sitting in front of the TV and feeling like I'm from this elite class, this alumni of talented singers that made it on this crazy journey."

Top40 Charts reports, 'March 20th marks the release of Elliott Yamin, the debut album from one of American Idol's most memorable contestants. Set for release on Hickory Records (a label affiliated with Sony ATV Music Publishing where Yamin is signed as a writer,) the CD boasts both a lion's share of songs co-written and performed by Yamin as well as participation from some of the entertainment industry's most respected songwriters and producers. Among the writers and producers who worked with Yamin in the creation of the CD are Stargate (Beyoncé, Ne-Yo, Rihanna), Josh Abraham (Pink, Linkin Park, 30 Seconds to Mars), DJ Lethal (Evanescence, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit), Michael Mangini (Joss Stone, Baha Men, David Byrne), and Derek Bramble (David Bowie, Vanessa Williams, Lalah Hathaway).

Fans of Yamin's work on American Idol will be delighted to find his version of Leon Russell's "A Song for You," which Yamin's own idol, Donny Hathaway, recorded in 1971. Commenting on the recording process, Yamin said: "Collaborating on the songs with these talented people who've been involved in music way longer than me and who share my passion for it has been an incredible experience. I've learned so much from them as an artist and as a person. The key to writing is to come from the heart. People relate to real feelings."

Perhaps even more compelling than Yamin's status as an out-of- nowhere vocal powerhouse – he came to American Idol with no vocal training and no real performance experience – is his role as the underdog, who as a child had to cope with near-deafness in his right ear and at 16 was faced with Type 1 diabetes.

Asked how he's coped with sudden fame, he points out: "A lot of young people with diabetes have said I've given them hope and made them believe in the power of music. They've told me how they've struggled and gone through difficult changes in their lives, and that seeing how I was able to achieve something through 'Idol' has inspired them to go for what they want. It's amazing to me that I've played that role in someone's life."
Yamin has truly 'given back" and has encouraged his fans to be involved in raising funds for the Richmond chapter of the ADA and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. "I've donated the clothes I've worn on 'Idol' and onstage during the tour and anything I've been widely photographed wearing. I've also donated American Idol memorabilia and autographs for fundraisers," he informs. "But I don't feel I've done enough yet – there's just so much more to do."

"When you look out into the audience and see people singing along and smiling and laughing and crying, you feel an incredible connection. The fact that you are able to move people that way is the most satisfying thing I've ever experienced. I thrive on it," Yamin says. "When I'm onstage, I'm home – I have a sense of belonging I've never felt before. It feels like what I was born to do. It has put my whole life into perspective. It's like I finally figured it out; I finally got it right: I'm a singer."

“My friends kept saying I had nothing to lose,” says singer-songwriter Elliott Yamin of his decision to audition for “American Idol,” “and I really didn’t. I was at a point in my life where I had no direction. I was just scraping by at my job. I thought, I’m 27 years old and what do I have to show for it? I was lost. Deep down inside, I wondered if by trying out, I could somehow put myself on a path to something I’d always longed for but never admitted to anyone.”

The secret was on its way out well before Yamin finished third in the fifth season of “Idol” (in a historically close race behind Taylor Hicks and Katherine McPhee); early in the competition, the ever-prickly Simon Cowell deemed him “potentially the best male vocalist in the history of ‘American Idol.’” With the release of his debut album, Elliott Yamin (due March 20, 2007, on Sony/ATV Music Publishing’s Hickory Records), few will believe this accomplished vocalist was once too embarrassed to sing out in his middle-school choir class.

“I only took that class because there were a lot of cute girls in there,” he says with typical candor. “I pretty much just lip-synched my way through it.”

The achievement represented by Elliott Yamin is all the more significant because the singer co-wrote the lion’s share of its songs. “I’m a baby in this game, and I’m not afraid to admit it,” he says. “Collaborating on the songs with these talented people who’ve been involved in music way longer than me and who share my passion for it has been an incredible experience. I’ve learned so much from them as an artist and as a person. The key to writing is to come from the heart. People relate to real feelings.”

Among the writer-producers who participated in the creation of Elliott Yamin are the duo known as Stargate (Beyoncé, Ne-Yo, Rihanna), Josh Abraham (Pink, Linkin Park, 30 Seconds to Mars), DJ Lethal (Evanescence, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit), Michael Mangini (Joss Stone, Baha Men, David Byrne), and Derek Bramble (David Bowie, Vanessa Williams, Lalah Hathaway).

Yamin describes “Wait for You,” the first single off the disc, as “a ballad about a man losing the woman he loves but hoping she will come back someday and vowing to wait for her until she does.” The ability to convey the emotional essence of a love song is one of Yamin’s key strengths, as is his versatility. “The album is very eclectic,” he says, “with bluesy elements and some pop/R&B, club bangers with hip-hop beats and very heartfelt ballads.”

Fans of Yamin’s work on “American Idol” will be delighted to find his version of Leon Russell’s “A Song for You,” which Yamin’s own idol, Donny Hathaway, recorded in 1971. Viewers will recall that Yamin’s smoldering performance brought Paula Abdul to tears – she said he was an American idol – and moved Cowell to liken Yamin’s rendition to a vocal master class, judging it “superb.” Randy Jackson simply called the young man from Richmond, Va., “the bomb.”

Also making an appearance on Elliott Yamin is “Movin’ On,” which the singer co-wrote and which is likely to remind “AI” devotees of the time Abdul called him “one funky white boy.” The song was previewed on AOL’s First Listen Program, which landed it on AOL Music’s home page throughout Grammy weekend. Hundreds of thousands of visitors listened, many of whom posted rave reviews.

Yamin’s whiskey-soaked tenor – an instrument he characterizes as “raw” and “gritty,” more Wilson Pickett than Sam Cooke – unifies the disc’s disparate flavors. The record is also commendable for capturing the immediacy of Yamin’s live performances and his palpable joy in singing.

Listening to the album today, it’s hard to believe that Yamin kept his vocal gifts under wraps for most of his life.

His mother, on the other hand, did aspire to be a professional singer, moving to Los Angeles from Virginia to further that aim. Elliott was born in L.A. and lived there until the age of 10. He says music was always a presence at home, particularly what he calls “the golden oldies.” By the time he was eight years old, people began to notice his natural abilities, but, he confirms, “I was always shy about my singing.”

He credits Whitney Houston as the first performer with whom he was “absolutely infatuated,” declaring, “Whitney was my girl.” “I’d put on her records and try to hit those notes – my voice was a lot higher then,” he continues. “She has definitely been an influence.” Houston is joined in that category by Stevie Wonder, about whom Yamin says, “He was the guy I tried to emulate vocally. Growing up, I was in love with Stevie Wonder, and I always will be.”

Still, unlike a lot of kids whose vocal skills are detected early on, Elliott did not take voice lessons, did not appear in school talent shows, did not practice his Grammy speech and was not stage-mothered. “My mom was always supportive, but she didn’t try to push me,” he notes. “She knew I hated to be the center of attention and she respected that.”

Shadowing the development of Elliott’s clandestine talent was his struggle with what he calls “bad tubes in my ears.” “That part of my childhood was very difficult,” he confides. “My ears always hurt, and I was the kid who always had to put drops in his ears. I was in and out of the hospital. When I was 13, my right eardrum burst and I had to have eardrum-replacement surgery. But I still can’t really hear in my right ear.” Doctors estimate that he has, in fact, suffered 90 percent hearing loss in that ear. “It’s always been a part of my life,” Yamin says matter-of-factly, having never allowed his hearing deficit to become a hindrance. “It’s just annoying to have to say ‘what?’ all the time.”

When Elliott was 10, his family moved to Richmond, because, as he explains, “My mother wanted to be near her family.” He reveals: “Moving to the South was such a culture shock for me; it felt like everything about it was different from what I was used to in L.A. It took me a while to adjust. But after that, I just loved Virginia. I’m so proud of where I come from. I miss Richmond every day [Yamin returned to L.A. after the 2006 “American Idol” tour to pursue his recording career]. I am most definitely a southern boy.”

He says his life in the Old Dominion State was “normal and boring,” but his parents divorced when he was 13, and at 16, he learned he had Type 1 diabetes. His mother and grandmother were both Type 2 diabetics, but Yamin was nonetheless traumatized when his condition was confirmed (his mother had made the initial diagnosis). He says he’s never been afraid of injections, having gone for weekly allergy shots for years, but nonetheless concedes: “It was very hard for me at first. I didn’t want to believe it. I went through a long period of denial; I kept thinking, this can’t be happening. I went from being your average 16-year-old knucklehead to having to confront this incurable, life-threatening disease. All the crazy, fun stuff you do when you’re a teenager had to take a back seat to watching what I ate and monitoring my insulin level. I didn’t want any part of it.”

Of course, Elliott long ago learned how to live with his diabetes and has for five years worn an insulin pump, which takes most of the guesswork out of self-treatment. But his vivid memories of those difficult early years have inspired him to visit children and teens at the American Diabetes Association’s summer camp in Pittsburgh. “Hanging out with those kids and sharing my story is really important to me,” he says. “It was always in my mind that if I actually made it far enough on ‘American Idol’ and the audience got familiar with me, I’d be able to let people know more about diabetes. I knew I could help bring it to the forefront and educate young people about this disease, which most people who don’t have it don’t really understand.”

Yamin has exceeded that goal, getting his fans involved in his efforts to raise funds for the Richmond chapter of the ADA and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. “I’ve donated the clothes I’ve worn on ‘Idol’ and onstage during the tour and anything I’ve been widely photographed wearing. I’ve also donated ‘AI’ memorabilia and autographs for fundraisers,” he informs. “But I don’t feel I’ve done enough yet – there’s just so much more to do.”

Diabetes certainly hasn’t kept Yamin from being a fully functioning member of society. Indeed, he’s been working since he was 17, holding what he estimates as “46 or 47” jobs, which have included a long stint at Foot Locker, working for a company that calibrates industrial scales, manning a pharmacy counter and serving as an on-air personality at Power 92.1, one of Richmond’s urban-format radio stations. But, as he relates, there was an aimlessness to his life. “I was wasting my days away,” he confesses.

Fortunately for his legion of fans, Elliott’s buddies were determined to put a stop to that. “My close friends knew I could sing. They got me into doing a little karaoke here and there,” he reports. “A couple of years ago, I won $1,000 in a karaoke contest. I sang ‘One Last Cry’ by Brian McKnight. They gave me the money in cash. I put a dent in it buying drinks for my friends at a club that night.”

He took a few tentative stabs at music thereafter, singing briefly with a jazz combo, mustering his courage at a handful of open-mic nights and helping out some friends in the studio. But, he says, “it was pretty much something I just did between jobs. I never took it seriously.”

Watching “American Idol,” however, was something he took seriously. “I was definitely a viewer and a fan,” he affirms. “I would call my friends during commercials and say, ‘Did you see that guy?!’ They were really into it, too, and they were always pushing me to try out. But as much as I loved the show, I really had no grasp of what it could do for me. I mean, obviously I knew that Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken and other finalists had gone on to big careers. But I never put it together that I could be one of them; it was just beyond imagining.” Then again, when his friends persisted in asking, “What have you got to lose?” Elliott knew there was only one answer: nothing.

Even after he made it onto the show and began climbing in the standings, it felt like a lark – until Stevie Wonder appeared as a guest vocal coach. He still shakes his head with incredulity as he relates what happened next: “When Stevie Wonder walked into the room and we found out we were going to work with him, I couldn’t believe it. I’m a very emotional person and I got tears in my eyes. At that point, I said to myself, okay, this could end for me right here, right now, and I’d be fine with that. I was real close with everyone on the show, including all the behind-the-scenes people. When the editors were cutting together the segment with Stevie, they said, ‘Hey, check this out.’ It was footage of him saying I should definitely pursue a career in music. I was stunned. To be validated by Steve Wonder … ”

That does tend to boost one’s confidence. Coupled with the fun Yamin was having onstage, Wonder’s encouragement made him think that maybe he should try to become a professional singer.

The ensuing “American Idol” tour – during which he heard thousands of hometown fans chanting his name before the curtain rose at the Richmond Coliseum – cemented his resolve. He says that like his “AI Rat Pack” crew (Taylor Hicks, Chris Daughtry, Bucky Covington and Ace Young; one music writer called Yamin the Sammy Davis, Jr., of the bunch), he craves the stage.

“When you look out into the audience and see people singing along and smiling and laughing and crying, you feel an incredible connection. The fact that you are able to move people that way is the most satisfying thing I’ve ever experienced. I thrive on it,” Yamin says. “When I’m onstage, I’m home – I have a sense of belonging I’ve never felt before. It feels like what I was born to do. It has put my whole life into perspective. It’s like I finally figured it out; I finally got it right: I’m a singer.”

American Idol reports: 'Elliott Yamin fans are being awarded for their patience! He is set to release his debut album on March 20. Elliott worked closely with his music publisher on the writing and production of the album, and the two parties will similarly cooperate in the marketing of the project.

"This is an ideal situation that enables Elliott to have real creative and marketing input over the music that he produces," manager Jeff Rabhan said. The deal will also allow Elliott "to participate as a meaningful partner in the album's financial success," Rabhan said.

"I'm excited to get my music out to my fans, and I'm thrilled to be back in the studio working on original music," Elliott said.

"We are very happy to help Elliott achieve his vision and bring his music to his strong fan base,” said Danny Strick, President, Sony/ATV Music Publishing. “This project is a natural development of our role as a modern day publisher, helping our writers to reach the broadest audience."

Elliott’s first single, “Movin’ On”, is already available.

Elliott finished his nationwide American Idol tour shortly after the show ended, performing live in front of half a million fans. He’s planning a solo tour for spring/summer 2007.'

what I've been up to...

Hey everybody!....hope all is well!....so, some of yall have already noticed that I've kicked off my press tour for my album yesterday in Minneapolis,MN...my day started w/a a couple of radio morning shows...also did the local news there...then to cap off my visit, I spent the rest of the day meeting w/the top executives over @Target headquarters...Minneapolis is actually where their home office is based, and they're going to be one the major distributors who will be selling my exclusive album...which happens to contain 2 extra bonus tracks!...needless to say, the meeting went better than I expected, and I think my team and I really made an indelible, first impression on all of the great folks @Target!....our relationship is going to be mutually beneficial!...with that said, I'm now "Movin On" (no pun) to Detroit rock city to do more of the same!...it's so much fun getting everybody excited about my debut album, and what we've all worked so hard to accomplish!...then I'm back to LA to start rehearsing for our soundstage performance on rehearsals.com...we'll be taping that next week!....so, along w/amazon.com...you can also pre-order my album on walmart.com, as well as target.com....heehee...there I go again!....alright...now we're really going to start hitting the streets hard over the next month and a half, and I want you all to be right there with me!....every step of the way, as we embark this amazing journey together!...thanks again for all of your love and support!...special shouties to all my fans I get messages and mail from in Singapore, Korea, UK, Austrailia, Spain, Canada, Japan, Indonesia, Phillipines, Israel,...talk to ya'll in a few...god bless!
